Skogsmulle and friends - the concept

Friluftsfrämjandet started as an organisation for promoting skiing and was mostly for grown up people. As years passed activities all the year around were added for younger people as well. In the middle of 1950 a man named Gösta Frohm started to work at FF’s office. He thought that this organisation could do something for smaller children so, in 1957 he introduced a Skogsmulle School for 5-6 year old children.

The Skogsmulle ideas became a success
After a few years the Skogsmulle ideas became a success. Skogsmulle is a fictional figure who lives in the forest. He helps children to love nature through fairy-tales, songs and games while out in the woods studying animals and plants. He has a simple philosophy that if you can help children to love nature, they will take care of nature, because you cherish things you love. 50 years ago Gosta saw that urbanisation was rapidly removing children from nature. He believed that Skogsmulle schools would compensate for this.

Gösta Frohm wrote a book with short stories about Skogsmulle, © Gösta Frohm, 1971.
The first story is about how Skogsmulle was born.

Skogsmulle in Japan
"A Swedish method of teaching children about the importance of nature in forest classrooms through a well-loved woodland creature called “Mulle,” is spreading slowly but steadily in Japan. Once they undergo “Mulle-training,” teachers, educators and volunteers teach younger generations about biodiversity, preservation, and the fun and beauty that exist in our precious forests."
